Some fifteen years ago, becoming a hero used to be a highly impossible task for most aspirants. Although the same state prevails today for individuals who try it all alone, it has in fact become easier for aspirants that hail form families with history in the cine industry.
Vijay was first introduced to the world of films and provided opportunities to act in a scene or two by his dad S.A. Chandrasekar while he was still a successful director. Later S.A.C made his son Vijay a hero in his own direction and then propelled him forward in the industry. Suriya, who was working for a garments industry was made into a hero in the film 'Neruku Ner' by Vasanth after getting Sivakumar's consent.
Karthi, Suriya's younger brother, who worked as an assistant to Manirathnam has also become a hero now. The heirs of Kasthuriraja too have entered the cine filed. While Selvaragavan has become a director, Danush has become one of the favorite actors in the cine industry. Editor Mohan introduced his eldest son Raja as a director and his younger son as a hero in the same film (Jayam). Producer Patiyal Sekar has made his son Vishnuvaradhan a director and Krishna into a hero. The daughters of Rajini and Kamal both Soundhariya and Sruthi have now entered the world of cinema. This list doesn’t end here it goes on! This trend has become the vogue not only in Tamil industry but also in other language cine industries.
If you ask the question, "what about the others who wish to make a career in cine industry?" You get two types of answers for this. In the first case, even if the heirs get into the cine field, it is impossible to be successful or become a favorite actor unless they have the dedication and talent in their respective fields. We have also witnessed that quite a few of the heirs that made force entry into the cine field have disappeared after working for a film or two. At the same time when the heirs enter the cine field in large numbers, those without a cinema background in spite of their talents and goals are unable to find themselves a place in the industry and this is an undeniable fact.
Gone are the good old days of Balachandar and Bharathiraja! Both of them were able to find new faces and discover new talents from the laymen. While Balachandar made the bus conductor Rajini and the dance master Kamal in to movie stars, Bharathiraja made Pandiayan, a fancy store owner, and Vignesh, who was running a petty shop, into film stars.
How many directors today are as courageous as Vasantha Balan who introduced the son of a grams merchant in his film 'angaadi theru'? Even if the directors dare to do such a thing, how many producers are willing to support them or invest on a new face? For aspirants that don’t have a cine background, finding an opportunity really is like a mirage. If they are able to achieve in spite of the hurdles it certainly can be compared to an oasis.
While this being the state of cine industry on one side, there is yet another side, were people with lots of money try to make themselves a hero in very funny manner. This is also being witness very often in the Tamil cine industry.
If talented aspirants that don’t have cine background try in the areas such as, direction and technology they are able to reach their goals after a great struggle. However, to become a hero is becoming a mirage to them. The reason is the prevalence of the new trend that permits only the rich to become heroes in movies. This would only result in only heirs of cine stars becoming the heroes of the future.
