Common wealth games which started as a blast in Delhi ended with the same enthusiasm yesterday. Before the start of common wealth games, we had heard many disappointing news such as improper rooms in hostels, breakdown of bridges, insufficient security and many other things which created a lot of speculation. However, in the games part, India proved its worthiness and secured second spot by getting one hundred and one medals.
In 2002, India won 69 medals in common wealth games and that was the highest score. However, this year, India has developed so much and this is the first time ever for India to finish second in the common wealth games.
In India, cricket is the only sport that gets attention. Through the common wealth games, it has been once again clarified that if at least half the attention given to cricket is diverted to other sports, India can shine well in other sports category too.
As we enjoy the success as a sports fan, we still have problems in digesting some of the events as a culture fan.
During the closing ceremony yesterday, theme song ‘Chak De India’ was sung by Sukveendar Singh. Following that song, Shuba Mukthal sung ‘Apke Savan’. Many other singers from bollywood such as Sunithi Sejakhan, Shankar Mahadevan sung numerous songs to keep the fans happy. Self defense demos and programs from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Punjab and Gujarat people were also hosted during the festival.
There are numerous good singers not only in Tamil Nadu, but also in various southern states like Andhra, Kerala and Karnataka. However, we could only see bollywood singers showcasing their talents in the common wealth games. Tamil Nadu’s Silambattam group was given a chance just because they wanted to show off something about folklore of India.
You can think that A.R.Rahman sung in the opening ceremony of common wealth games. Even though A.R.Rahman is a Tamilian, he is much utilized by the bollywood film industry and he represents Hindi film industry of India all over the world.
We are not crazy about our language. We don’t want to paint colors of religion or language to the ever lasting music. However, India is a country of different cultures and languages, but artists of particular group are only honored during common wealth games, which is complete injustice. India is popular for its diversity, yet we wonder why prominence is given only to Hindi film industry and associated artists.
