If you notice the films that were released for the past few months, you could have observed that these films were produced by members of influential political family. Films that were successful in box office too were either produced by them or produced by someone else and these people step in to releasing part of the film.
Small and medium film producers are unable to match these influential family members as they are not able to get theaters to release their films. How will they get theaters since theaters in the state are occupied and dominated by the political family ?
A lot of money is invested in producing a cinema; hence apart from reviews, awards ,appreciation, commercial success is very much needed for the survival. Apart from the long standing CD Piracy trouble, nowadays industry is suffering from yet setback. On the first day of film release itself through internet people are able to watch it. This will certainly reduce the expectations of people . It is indeed very crafty in these circumstances on these people’s part to get back the investment in a week’s time.
At the same time Producers who can invest huge amount of money , are still pinning their hopes on popular directors and actors. Betting on the winning horse may be the right business tactic ,but at the same time ,there are lot of talented horses who are desperate to get their chances. Some Consideration can be given to them.
When some of the well known Hero’s films ,directed by very popular directors are getting only moderate success, films directed by some new directors with a different story and concept have become a huge success. There are hundreds and hundereds of youngsters in the state , desperately searching for a chance with their stories and files. They have the talent and energy to change the face of Tamil cinema with a single chance, but who will give them a break? Fortunately if they get a chance ,their producer will not able to release that film due to shortage of theaters. How will you term this peculiar and unfavourable situation for good films?
Cinema is not just a money making business ; It is an amazing artistic combination of Painting,Music,Makeup,Dance,Lyrics all jelling together .International film festivals generally consider the quality of the films as merit and not the business margin and profit of films. Tamil cinema has to travel a lot of miles to reach a honourable status. It should not be limited to a mere profit and loss business.
People who are well equipped with money to produce, distribute and release a film can do that for profit alone. But atleast give one or two chances to new people who can give good films, as an experimental attempt. If some of the good films are not succeding, economical factors are alone responsible for it. People who can tackle this issue with their money can fund for good films as a service to the society.
