Bala’s quality and procrastination are they right?

Bala provides uniqueness not only in every one of his movies but also in every character as well.

Undertaker that spends his life with corpses; love of a young gambler; background of beggars; and people that imagine themselves as gods are a few examples that show the unique nature of his movies.

Even what is called new and different in movies has become old stuff. The specialty of Bala’s films is that they have a blend of the uniqueness without artificiality. Soon after he left Balu Mahendra, his very first movie ‘Sethu’ was a hit and in fact he meticulously utilized Vikram, who wasn’t successful then.

It was Bala who gave a different dimension to Suriya; created a new path for Rajkiran; introduced Karunas as the comical character ‘loduku pandi’. As far as I know release of Sethu was under the dilemma for some time. During its shooting at Kumbakonam, the producer even had difficulty to pay of the Rs 3,000 bill to a paint shop.

Somehow he managed to release the movie. Although it was hit right from the first show, the collection was poor during the first week. The song ‘enge sellum indha paadai…’ was truly reflecting the uncertain future of the producer of Sethu, Bala, Vikram, and cameraman Rathnavelu.

This is when the movie was promoted by the media. The movie went on for 100 days. Producer Kandhasamy who had a debt of three thousand later on had over 10 crores, which the movie had made.

Although the movie own national award, Vikram lost his award by just a single vote. Bala’s direction however, set this loss right as well in ‘Pithamagan’.

As of now Bala directs ‘Avan Ivan’ starred by Arya and Vishal. Vishal acts in the role of a Transsexual.

“People say that I take too long to complete my movies there are many reasons that delayed ‘Naan Kadavul’. Hereafter I will not take such a long time. I will complete ‘Avan Ivan’ in six months,” said he. But less than one fourth of the movie has been shot in this period. Is this right?

While he is being criticized for the time he takes to complete a movie, Vsanthabalan has supported Bala during the opening ceremony of the movie ‘Kanimozhi’. “It certainly takes time create movies such as Titanic or Avatar; you can do the movie at your own pace Bala,” said he. Is this right too?

These questions cannot be provided with a straight answers like yes or no. The matters at background are what decide that. While Hollywood is incredibly huge, Tamil cinema on the other hand, in spite of highly talented artistes, hasn’t grown even to the extent of Telugu cinema.

Unless the budget and time frame is well planned, it will be difficult for the producers to see ROI. While grandeur is important, time is important as well.

If you consider the time and calculate the interest on the investment, the overall budget shoots up drastically.

The delay can only be justified if the entire amount spent is collected by screening the movie. Unfortunately 99% of the movies are unable to achieve this. ‘Naan Kadavul’ had incurred heavy loss just because of the delay. Time frame is vital for success in commerce.

While the quality of Bala’s movies can be appreciated, it is important to avoid the delay as well.
