A plan to sustain short-lived movies
Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:41

Ramanarayanan’s new plan has come as a boon to low budget movie producers.

The life of the Tamil movies today has become shorter than the gnats of the rainy season. The list of producers that celebrate fortnight’s tenure of their movies as an achievement has been growing by the day. Many of the producers sacrifice everything they have and even take up loans with high interests with the hope of making profits with their movies. However, many end up in debts with their short-lived movies.

The reason cited for such disasters … they say that releasing several movies at the same time might be the cause. One other reason is that small budget films don’t have a place when big-budget movies are released at the same time. And this has been going on for quite a few years now. What else can change their fate?

The solution has come!

Ramanarayanan who has been elected as the president of the producers’ association again has announced a scheme that would benefit producers of small-budget movies.

“The non-availability of theaters has lead to the difficulty in screening of small-budget films. In order to avoid this situation, a resolution that permits only three movies to be released in a week will be passed. Movies have to register in the producers association with certificate from auditors. Depending on the registration seniority, the working committee will specify the date of the release of the movies.” This is the plan announced by Ramanarayanan.

This has come as an excellent idea when the situation of Tamil cinema has been worsening by the day in the commercial arena.

Will this make a movie generate revenue for sure? Not exactly! However, if the movie is good, the Tamil audiences are generous enough to shun the disparity between high budget and low budget films. Even if it is Super star’s movie, and if they don’t like it, certainly theaters will be empty. There are also instances of the movies being purposely retuned from theaters even when the results seem to be good.

If the waiting of subsequent movies for release and the state of high-budget films occupying too may theaters are restricted, producers will at least be able to get back their investments. This plan has bright chances of saving low-budget producers.

For example, recently eight films were released on the same day. In this July alone, it is said that about 20 movies are being released. When so many movies are released in the same day it is difficult to find theaters that can screen the movies. Many producers are even satisfied if theaters are able to screen their movies at least for the morning show. It is impossible to take back your investments, by running a morning show alone.

So if the scale ‘three films a week’ is adhered to then there is a chance that low-budget films will survive. If a low-budget film is well received, then it can continue to generate good income. While we at Ozeeya welcome this plan with red carpet, we also present this bouquet to Ramanarayanan, who has assumed the office of the president of producers’ association once again.
